San Houston keeps an eye on attendees at the 2015 meeting.

A Special Message from Barbara Miles, President,
 American Studies Association of Texas

Hello everyone:

I wanted to thank you for your contribution in making ASAT 2015 a success. From the support of Sam Houston State University administration to session presentations, all came together to create a very enjoyable and informative event.

Here are a couple of updates from the officers' confab:

All ASAT officers currently serving were re-elected for 2015-2016.

ASAT 2016 will again be held at SHSU and I will again serve as conference coordinator

Sean Ferrier-Watson (Collin College-Plano) was named as JASAT's new Book Review Editor-Congratulations, Sean! The deadline to submit a paper or book review to JASAT is April 1-July 31st. Remember that this is a highly-respected, peer-reviewed journal, so if your presentation was well-received at this year's conference, please consider submitting it. This is a great way to promote our chapter.

When discussing ways to promote ASAT 2016, efforts to broaden the definition of "presentation" were considered; exhibits, short performances, and poster research will be emphasized on the CFP.

The CFP will be posted by March 15th, with a deadline of September 15th in an effort to provide more prep time for those submitting abstracts

I'll bring this to a close by saying that I would like to see a greater commitment to the 2016 meeting. For the last two years the program included the screening of a theme-related classic film introduced by Dr. Ralph Pease, who has forgotten more about American (and foreign) film than the rest of us will ever know. Only a handful of people attended, which has been disappointing. The audience for our previous Keynote speakers, both of whom did an outstanding job, has been anti-climatic. Session attendance on Thursday and Saturday needs to improve as well. Registrants assigned to these beginning and ending sessions deserve a decent showing. It takes a great deal of time and effort to put this event together-please make an effort to support ALL aspects of the event, even if that means making arrangements to have a couple of your classes covered by colleagues or scheduling an out of class assignment so that you can enjoy the conference in its entirety.

The ASAT email remains active throughout the year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions and/or comments. Also, check out the website for more information regarding JASAT, and highlights of ASAT 2015 when they are available. Also, consider posting to the ASAT blog - encourage others to get involved in the chapter and the conference.

Have a great end to your semester and a blessed holiday season-

Barbara
